Many years ago I found this recipe for breadsticks in a cookbook, and it quickly became a family favorite. We have tried other recipes throughout the years but always come back to this one. It is simple and delicious with only a few ingredients. This batch makes about 12 breadsticks in two 9×13 pans, but you can easily half the recipe if you need less.
Parmesan Garlic Breadsticks
1 Tbsp. yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 Tbsp. honey
1/2 tsp. salt
3 cups flour
1/2 cup melted butter
garlic salt or Johnny’s Garlic spread seasoning
parmesan cheese (shredded or grated)
Directions
Combine yeast, warm water, and honey. Allow mixture to rest for 5-10 minutes or until yeast softens and foams. Add salt and flour and stir to combine. In the video above, I mixed by hand. I have also used my Kitchen Aid mixer with a dough hook to mix and knead them.
Knead dough on floured cutting board. Cut into breadsticks with a sharp knife. I usually get about 12 from a batch depending on how thick I cut them. We like the breadsticks straight but you could twist them if you prefer.
Drizzle with melted butter. Sprinkle with Johnny’s Garlic Spread seasoning or garlic salt, depending on your taste. Personally, I don’t like a really strong garlic flavor, so I sprinkle somewhat lightly. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese. We prefer shredded parmesan, but grated parmesan works great too.
Cover with a clean dishtowel and allow to rise for 1 1/2 hours.
Bake for 17-20 minutes at 375. Enjoy with your favorite soups, chili, stew, etc!
